Massive Gibeon Iron Meteorite, Namibia
Weighing 240 kg (529 lb)
This monumental iron meteorite originates from the Gibeon fall, first documented in Namibia in the 19th century. Weighing an extraordinary 240 kilograms, this specimen is the largest pure-iron meteorite ever offered at auction, surpassing the previous record by over 100 kilograms.
Composed primarily of nickel-iron alloy, Gibeon meteorites are known for their medium octahedrite structure, exhibiting characteristic Widmanstätten patterns when cut and etched. This particular specimen, however, is preserved in its natural form, displaying a sculptural surface with regmaglypts—thumbprint-like indentations formed during atmospheric entry.
The Gibeon fall, now protected, is no longer a source for new material. As such, specimens of this size and quality have become exceptionally rare. This example, with its monumental presence and scientific significance, represents a unique opportunity for both institutional and private collectors.
Note:
Export of meteorites from Namibia is now restricted. This specimen was acquired prior to these regulations and is accompanied by full provenance documentation.
