Vieux Andenne Porcelain Holy Water Font with Crucifix

Vieux Andenne.
Belgium, mid-19th century.

A Vieux Andenne porcelain holy water font featuring a black wooden crucifix with a porcelain corpus of Christ, mounted above a finely modeled porcelain group of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene in mourning. The figures are depicted in flowing robes, standing together at the foot of the cross, their gestures expressing sorrow and devotion. The scallop-shaped basin is adorned with gilt highlights and Rococo-style molded ornament. The reverse is undecorated.

Wijwaterbak met kruisbeeld, Vieux Andenne.

Vieux Andenne.

36 cm. high.

Note:
The porcelain production of Vieux Andenne in Belgium during the 18th and 19th centuries is celebrated for its high-quality devotional works. Combining fine modeling, white porcelain bodies, and restrained gilding, Vieux Andenne holy water fonts were popular for domestic altars and convent chapels. The depiction of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene mourning at the foot of the cross reflects traditional Catholic iconography associated with the Passion narrative.
