Vieux Andenne Porcelain Crucifix with Angel and Skull Motifs

Vieux Andenne.
Belgium, mid-19th century.

A Vieux Andenne porcelain crucifix featuring a black wooden cross with a porcelain corpus of Christ, above a molded porcelain base. The base is adorned with a polychrome kneeling angel in prayer, set between stylized foliage and gilt detailing. At the top of the base, directly beneath the cross, is a prominent skull motif symbolizing Golgotha. The piece is finished in white glaze with hand-applied gold highlights and pastel enamel to the angel’s face and wings.

38 cm. high.

Note:
Vieux Andenne porcelain from Belgium is known for its refined devotional figures and religious accessories. Crucifixes like this one were intended for private altars, combining traditional Catholic symbolism—the skull of Adam, the praying angel, and floral motifs—within the Rococo-influenced style typical of Andenne's mid-19th-century ceramic workshops. The charming stylisation and color palette were designed to appeal to popular devotion in domestic settings.
