Glazed Ceramic Crucifix, by Charles Vos (1888–1954)

Signed to the reverse "Charles Vos".

Netherlands, circa 1940s–1950s.

Wall-mounted crucifix in glazed ceramic featuring a raised figure of Christ modeled in simplified form with stylised anatomy, elongated limbs, and bowed head. The crucifix is cast in a single slab form with a creamy yellow glaze showing faint greenish tonalities. The inscription "INRI" is molded above the figure’s head. Signed on the verso by the artist.

Wandkruis in geglazuurd keramiek met een verheven figuur van Christus, gemodelleerd in vereenvoudigde vorm met gestileerde anatomie, langgerekte ledematen en gebogen hoofd. Het kruis is uitgevoerd als één geheel en bedekt met een crèmekleurig glazuur met subtiele groenige nuances. Boven het hoofd van Christus is het opschrift “INRI” in reliëf aangebracht. Gesigneerd aan de achterzijde “Charles Vos”.

Charles Vos (1888–1954) was a leading figure in 20th-century Dutch religious sculpture. Trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and influenced by Jan Bronner and Charles Eyck, he developed a modern approach to sacred art that emphasized clarity, stylisation, and emotional resonance.
