Biography:

Johannes Hendrikus (Joop) Moesman (Utrecht, January 6, 1909 – Houten, February 3, 1988) was a Dutch surrealist painter, calligrapher, typographer, and type designer. Initially, he worked as a draftsman for the Dutch Railways. He became the most important surrealist painter in the Netherlands. Perhaps his most famous work is the painting *Het gerucht* (*The Rumor*). Moesman's oeuvre gained international recognition in the 1960s thanks to the efforts of Her de Vries, who presented reproductions of his work to André Breton, the leader of the surrealists in Paris. Breton subsequently decided to showcase Moesman's work at the International Surrealist Exhibition in Milan. Along with Dirkje Kuik and Henc van Maarseveen, he was a founder of the Utrecht art society De Luis.
