Glazed Earthenware Plaque of Stella Maris by Charles Vos (1888–1954)

Glazed earthenware wall plaque in relief, depicting the Virgin Mary as Stella Maris ("Star of the Sea"), holding the Christ Child amidst stylized waves and lilies. The border is adorned with roses and architectural elements, and a star is depicted beside the halo. Executed in a soft white glaze with a, flowing modeling typical of the artist's devotional work.

Geglazuurde aardewerken wandplaquette in reliëf, met een voorstelling van de Heilige Maagd Maria als Stella Maris (“Sterre der Zee”), die het Christuskind draagt te midden van gestileerde golven en lelies. De rand is versierd met rozen en architecturale elementen, met een ster naast de nimbus. Uitgevoerd in een zachte witte glazuur met vloeiende modellering, kenmerkend voor het devotionele werk van de kunstenaar.

Note:

Charles Vos (1888–1954), a prominent sculptor from Maastricht, trained under Jan Bronner and Charles Eyck, became well known for his religious works in ceramics, bronze, and stone. "Stella Maris," Latin for "Star of the Sea," is an ancient title for the Virgin Mary, symbolizing her role as a guiding star for Christian believers. Vos' interpretation combines Art Deco influences with traditional religious iconography.
