Ceramic Wall Plaque of the Holy Kinship, by Charles Vos

Charles Hubert Marie Vos (1888–1954)

Maastricht, Netherlands, circa 1930, signed upper right Ch. Vos.

Wall-mounted ceramic relief showing the Holy Kinship with the Virgin Mary, Saint Anne, and the Christ Child, modelled in high relief with a stylised naturalistic treatment. The three figures are clad in draped robes with simplified facial features and gently modelled hands. The surface is textured and finished in a pale, matte green patina over natural terracotta, echoing early medieval devotional sculpture. The reverse with incised finger grooves and two suspension holes for wall mounting.

Keramische wandplaquette van de Heilige Maagschap, door Charles Vos.

Charles Hubert Marie Vos (1888–1954), Maastricht, Nederland, circa 1930, gesigneerd rechtsboven Ch. Vos.

38 x 20.5 cm

Note:

Charles Vos (1888–1954) was a leading sculptor of religious and monumental art in Maastricht. He studied under Jan Bronner and won the Dutch Prix de Rome in 1917. As a teacher at the Secondary School of Applied Arts and the Jan van Eyck Academy, he influenced a generation of Limburg artists. This ceramic relief reflects his commitment to spiritual subjects rendered in a modernist yet devotional idiom, and was likely produced in a local ceramic workshop, possibly in collaboration with Sphinx or Ramakers. Comparable works by Vos were intended for small chapels, schools, or private devotion.
