Square ceramic tile produced by Mosa, Maastricht, painted in sepia and black with the depiction of a monk in prayer, turning upwards towards a crucifix. Executed in a loose, expressionistic style with dynamic brushwork emphasizing the figure’s emotional intensity. Mounted in an oak frame; the tile impressed to the reverse with the Mosa Maastricht mark and "Made in Holland."

Vierkante keramische tegel vervaardigd door Mosa, Maastricht, beschilderd in sepia en zwart met de voorstelling van een biddende monnik, opkijkend naar een crucifix. Uitgevoerd in een losse, expressionistische stijl met dynamisch penseelwerk dat de emotionele intensiteit van de figuur benadrukt. Ingelijst in eikenhouten lijst. Achterzijde ingeperst met fabrieksmerk Mosa Maastricht en “Made in Holland”.

Note:

Jef Courtens (1923–2009) was a Dutch sculptor and painter associated with religious art in Limburg. A student of Charles Vos, Courtens worked during the 1940s on various religious commissions, often combining traditional Catholic iconography with a more modern, emotionally expressive style. This tile was produced in collaboration with Mosa, Maastricht, one of the leading ceramic producers in the Netherlands, and reflects the wartime resurgence of small devotional artworks for private or ecclesiastical settings.
