“Dream of Noah", Oil on canvas, Signed, 1989.
236 x 197 cm.
PROVENANCE Private collection, France Acquired by Anagi Art Foundation, Tbilisi
Note:
This work, Dream by Noah (1989), represents a mature and highly accomplished expression of Alexander (Shura) Bandzeladze’s late artistic practice, created at a pivotal moment in the development of Georgian abstract painting. Executed at the height of his late period, the composition reflects a fully realised synthesis of painterly freedom, spiritual depth, and chromatic refinement.
In Dream by Noah, Bandzeladze transforms biblical imagery into a fluid and meditative abstraction, where gesture and colour assume a poetic and symbolic resonance. The work exemplifies his distinctive visual language, defined by expressive brushwork and subtly modulated tonal harmonies, achieving a balance between emotional intensity and formal control.
This painting belongs to the body of late-period works through which Bandzeladze established his international presence. His nonfigurative compositions were introduced to European audiences in the landmark exhibitions Georgia On My Mind at DuMont Kunsthalle, Cologne, and Museum Fridericianum, Kassel (1989–1990).
More recently, Dream by Noah was presented at Frieze, London, in 2024, underscoring its continued relevance within an international context.
