A dramatic and emotive depiction of Saint John the Evangelist, shown seated beneath a tree with eyes uplifted in divine inspiration. The saint is dressed in flowing robes of rose and red, holding a quill and writing on a scroll. An eagle—his traditional symbol—appears at his side, partially shadowed. Rendered in the expressive Baroque style associated with Rubens, with rich coloration and dynamic composition. Craquelure and age-related surface wear consistent with the period.

Aan zijn zijde bevindt zich een adelaar — zijn traditionele symbool — deels gehuld in schaduw. Uitgevoerd in de expressieve barokstijl geassocieerd met Rubens, met rijke kleurtoetsen en een dynamische compositie. Craquelé en ouderdomsgerelateerde slijtage passend bij de periode.
