17th Century Baroque Carved Walnut Figure of a Male Saint
Southern Germany or Austria, late 17th century.
Finely carved walnut figure of a youthful male saint, standing in contrapposto with his head turned to the left and gaze downward. The figure is shown semi-draped in a voluminous mantle gathered at the waist and flowing around the legs. The exposed torso and naturalistic stance are characteristic of Baroque religious sculpture. The back is flat and roughly hewn, indicating former placement against a wall or within an architectural niche. Traces of old polychromy and wax patina; areas of surface wear and loss.

Fijn gesneden walnotenhouten beeld van een jeugdige mannelijke heilige, staand in contrapposto met het hoofd naar links gedraaid en de blik naar beneden gericht. De figuur is half gekleed in een volumineuze mantel, bijeen gehouden op de heupen en golvend rond de benen. De ontblote torso en de naturalistische houding zijn kenmerkend voor barokke religieuze beeldhouwkunst. De achterzijde is vlak en ruw bewerkt, wat wijst op een vroegere plaatsing tegen een muur of in een architectonische nis. Sporen van oude polychromie en waspatina; slijtage en verlies van oppervlak op enkele plaatsen.
