Charles Vos, Maastricht.
The Netherlands, circa 1940–1950.
Wall-mounted glazed ceramic crucifix depicting Christ crucified between the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. The corpus is modelled with expressive, elongated forms, Christ’s head bowed in death, flanked on the left by the Virgin Mary in a gesture of mourning, and on the right by Mary Magdalene with hand raised in sorrow. Executed in polychrome glaze with naturalistic tones: brown wood for the cross, flesh tones for the figures, and blue and red accents on the garments. The titulus “INRI” is inscribed on a scroll above Christ’s head.
Polychroom geglazuurd keramisch wandkruis, Charles Vos (1888–1954).
Charles Vos, Maastricht.
Nederland, circa 1940–1950.
52 x 37 cm.
Note:
Charles Vos, a central figure in Limburg religious sculpture, combined medieval iconography with a modern, expressive style. This crucifix shows the traditional Calvary group of Christ with the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, symbolising grief, compassion, and penitence. The glazing enhances the emotional immediacy of the scene, while the stylisation reflects Vos’s characteristic approach to devotional art.
