Polychrome and Parcel-Gilt Red Clay Figure of the Virgin Mary Teaching the Christ Child
Possibly France, circa 1900.
Moulded red clay devotional figure depicting the Virgin Mary standing behind the Christ Child, her hands gently resting on his shoulders as he holds an unfurled scroll. Both figures are richly clothed in elaborately painted robes with stencilled floral and foliate patterns in polychrome and gold, enhanced with applied imitation gemstones. The Virgin's mantle features a turquoise lining and ornate border. The piece is mounted on a simulated marble hexagonal base; the reverse is hollow and pigment-coated.

Gegoten rode klei devotiefiguur van de Heilige Maagd Maria, staand achter het Christuskind, haar handen zachtjes rustend op zijn schouders terwijl hij een uitgerolde rol vasthoudt. Beide figuren zijn rijk gekleed in gedetailleerd geschilderde gewaden met gestencilde bloem- en loofpatronen in polychromie en goud, verrijkt met aangebrachte imitatie-edelstenen. De mantel van de Maagd heeft een turquoise voering en een sierlijke rand. Het stuk is gemonteerd op een gesimuleerde marmeren hexagonale basis; de achterzijde is hol en met pigment bedekt.
