Southern Netherlands, early to mid. 20th century.
Rectangular upright ceramic relief depicting the Crucifixion of Christ in high relief against a stylised cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Saint John. The figures are glazed in soft tones of blue, beige, and ochre, with gilded haloes. The stepped base is inscribed in relief: VAN DE WIEGE / TOT AAN ’T GRAF / WEES O KRUIS / MIJ VAN DE STAAF, referencing a devotional text invoking the cross from cradle to grave. The reverse is unglazed.
Measurement: 41 x 18.5 x 4 cm.
Note:
The inscription is a variant of a traditional Dutch devotional rhyme that emphasizes lifelong Christian devotion centered on the symbolism of the cross. Although unsigned, the work shows stylistic similarities with early 20th-century ecclesiastical ceramics produced in religious or monastic art schools across Belgium and the southern Netherlands. These ceramic reliefs were commonly used in private devotion or mounted in chapels.
