Charles Vos, Maastricht.

The Netherlands, circa 1940–1950.

Wall-mounted glazed ceramic crucifix depicting Christ crucified, flanked by the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. Christ’s body is shown in a stylised, expressive manner with bowed head and outstretched arms. The Virgin Mary stands to the left in mourning, while Mary Magdalene stands to the right in a gesture of sorrow. Modelled in flowing forms and glazed in mottled tones of green and earthy brown. The titulus "INRI" is inscribed on a scroll above the cross.

Polychroom geglazuurd keramisch wandkruis van Charles Vos (1888–1954).

Charles Vos, Maastricht. Nederland, circa 1940–1950.

52 x 37 cm.

Note:
Charles Vos, a central figure in Limburg religious sculpture, combined medieval iconography with a modern, expressive style. This crucifix shows the traditional Calvary group of Christ with the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, symbolising grief, compassion, and penitence. The glazing enhances the emotional immediacy of the scene, while the stylisation reflects Vos’s characteristic approach to devotional art.
