Theo MACKAAY (1950)

Untitled

Oil on canvas

Signed and numbered, T. Mackaay, 011.

100 x100 cm.

Provenance:

Dutch private collection.

Note:

Theo Mackaay stands as a revered artist from Utrecht, boasting a distinguished career spanning over four decades and earning acclaim both domestically and internationally. Perhaps most notably, Mackaay is celebrated as the mastermind behind one of the Netherlands' most iconic sculptures: The Golden Calf of the Netherlands Film Festival. His artistic journey began with formal education at the esteemed Gerrit Rietveld Academy and the Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten.

Proficient in both sculpture and painting, Mackaay's oeuvre is characterized by what he terms 'deformed figurism,' a style that draws inspiration from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Marino Marini, and Ossip Zadkine. With a keen eye for distortion, Mackaay transforms recognizable forms into abstracted representations, departing from realism to evoke deeper, primordial themes. "You won't encounter my figures on the street," asserts Mackaay. "They are references to primordial forms and to the archetypal." Through his unique artistic signature, Mackaay invites viewers into a realm where the boundaries between the familiar and the enigmatic blur, inviting contemplation and exploration of the universal essence of form.
