Polychrome Glazed Ceramic Wall Tile of Saint Joseph, by Giel Keulen (1900–1960)

Sphinx, Petrus Regout, Maastricht, marked and with incised monogram “G.K.”

The Netherlands, circa 1945–1960.

Wall-mounted ceramic tile in high relief depicting the bust of Saint Joseph with short beard and calm, contemplative expression, set against a blue ground with a gilt-edged white halo. Executed in white-glazed ceramic with minimal detailing, accented in blue and gold. Arched form with smooth edges and suspension hole to the back. The tile is signed with the incised monogram of Giel Johannes Guillaume Keulen, chief modeller at De Sphinx.

Polychroom geglazuurde keramische wandtegel met Sint Jozef, Giel Keulen.

Sphinx Petrus Regout, Maastricht.

29 x 22 cm.

Note:
Giel Keulen’s stylised religious ceramics reflect the liturgical aesthetics and devotional clarity of post-war Dutch Catholicism. This portrayal of Saint Joseph — patron saint of workers, fathers, and the universal Church — follows Keulen’s characteristic approach: simplified, modern, yet reverent. Created at Petrus Regout’s Sphinx factory in Maastricht, this tile would have been used in domestic or institutional devotional spaces, often displayed alongside matching representations of the Sacred Heart or the Madonna.
