A Glazed Ceramic Figure of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, by Charles VOS ( 1888 - 1954)

Designed by Charles Hubert Marie Vos (Maastricht, 8 September 1888 - Maastricht, 19 February 1954).
Painted by Wim Visser (1954-'56).
Designed: 1929.
Believed to be created in 1954. But certainly between 1954 and 1956.

Stylized ceramic figure of Christ depicted standing in frontal pose with one hand extended and the other holding the drapery of his robe. The heart motif, surrounded by radiant beams and a crown of thorns, is prominently raised on the chest, signifying the Sacred Heart. The figure wears long, flowing robes with a classical drape that wraps across the shoulder and falls in stylized vertical folds. Rendered in a pale cream glaze with sprayed reddish-brown accents that define the contours and give depth to the folds. The figure stands on a square pedestal base, also glazed, and fitted with soft felt pads. The finish is glossy with a smooth surface and refined modernist lines.

H. 28 cm

Note:

It is highly plossible that this was created in 1954, after the death of Chales Vos, as a form of tribute to the Artist.

Biography:

Vos was a son of bookseller Jacques Joseph Hubertus Vos and Marie Virginie Stille. From 1906 to 1909, he worked in the studio of Cuypers & Co., run by father and son Pierre and Joseph Cuypers in Roermond. There, he also received training at the Drawing School. He then studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (1909–1914) in Antwerp. When the First World War broke out, he returned to Maastricht, where he carried out various jobs. In 1915, he moved to Amsterdam to study under Jan Bronner at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts); his classmates included Albert Termote and Jaap Kaas. In 1917, he won the Prix de Rome with a sculpture of Cain, which enabled him to undertake study trips. In 1919, he married Henriëtte (Jet) den Breejen (1893–1978), whom he had met as a model at the Amsterdam academy. In 1922, he returned to his native city of Maastricht, where he opened his own studio and also taught at the Secondary School of Applied Arts (1926–1953), later known as the City Academy, and from 1948 at the Jan van Eyck Academy. In 1928–1929, he also designed for the ceramics company Sphinx. In the 1930s, Charles Vos collaborated with the ecclesiastical art studio J.W. Ramakers & Sons in Geleen. There, Vos created designs that were executed by the Ramakers studio. Examples include the Holy Mary altar and the Holy Francis altar in the Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Heerlen, dating from 1930. Vos created many well-known sculptures that can still be seen in Maastricht today, such as the Mooswief on the Market Square and the statue of Saint Servatius of Maastricht at the Sint Servaas Bridge. He is often referred to as the "city sculptor of Maastricht." His focus was particularly on Christian religious art. He also created the statue for the Saint Servatius Fountain. From 1930 onward, Jan Balendong served as his regular executor. Vos was a member of the Dutch Circle of Sculptors and of the Bende van De Suisse, a group of painters, architects, poets, writers, and other art enthusiasts who, like the members of the Limburg Art Circle, spent many evenings in the 1920s at Café Suisse on the Vrijthof in Maastricht. In 1938, he was knighted in the Order of Orange-Nassau. Vos died in 1954 at the Sint Annadal Hospital, a few days after suffering a stroke.
