Red Clay Figure of the Madonna and Child by Charles Vos

Charles Hubert Marie Vos (1888–1954), The Netherlands.
The Netherlands, mid-20th century.

Seated figure of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, modeled in unglazed red clay with a soft, intimate expression and gently stylised drapery. The surface is left raw, showing tool marks and the coarse grain of the clay, which enhances the sculpture's expressive quality. Incised signature Ch. Vos to the side of the base.

Beeld van Madonna met Kind, Charles Vos (1888–1954).

Charles Hubert Marie Vos. Nederland, midden 20e eeuw.

30 cm. high.

Note:

Charles Vos was a leading figure in 20th-century Dutch religious sculpture, often referred to as the "city sculptor of Maastricht." He studied in Antwerp and Amsterdam, where he was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1917. After founding his studio in Maastricht in 1922, he became known for his Catholic devotional works and public monuments. This small-scale Madonna exemplifies his quiet, spiritual realism and his interest in emotional warmth and simplicity. It likely dates from his later period as a teacher and mentor to younger Limburg artists.
