Porcelain Holy Water Font Chapel with Madonna and Child, Vieux Paris

France, Paris, circa 1850–1870.

Glazed and gilt porcelain holy water font featuring a central figure of the crowned Madonna and Child beneath an architectural baldachin canopy. The canopy is supported by four columns and adorned with intricate floral garlands, rosettes, and gothic tracery, all accented in gold. The interior is furnished with decorative vases, and the font bowl projects from the front base. Richly modelled and detailed throughout, the structure is backed by an openwork lattice.

Geglazuurd en verguld porseleinen wijwatervat met centraal de gekroonde Madonna met Kind onder een architectonisch baldakijn. De overkapping wordt gedragen door vier zuilen en is versierd met bloemguirlandes, rozetten en gotisch maaswerk, alles geaccentueerd met goud. Het interieur is voorzien van decoratieve vaasjes; het wijwatervat steekt uit aan de voorzijde. Fijn gemodelleerd en rijk gedetailleerd, met opengewerkt traliewerk als achterwand.

This type of porcelain holy water font was popular among bourgeois Catholic families in mid-19th-century France. Produced by the many small factories that make up what is known collectively as Vieux Paris, these pieces often featured ornate architectural and devotional elements.
