Porcelain Devotional Grotto with Madonna, Vieux Paris.

France, Paris, circa 1850–1870.

Moulded Vieux Paris porcelain devotional model of a Marian grotto, featuring a standing Madonna figure enclosed within a domed architectural structure. The piece is richly decorated with applied rosettes in concentric rows across the dome and along the columns, with stylised leaf motifs on the supports. Fully glazed in white, the monochrome treatment emphasises the detailed surface texture and shadow effects created by the floral ornamentation and architectural recesses.

15 cm. high.

Note:
This all-white devotional object is typical of the understated yet symbolically rich Vieux Paris religious porcelain produced for domestic altars. The grotto form became especially popular following the Marian apparitions at Lourdes in 1858, with such models evoking the sanctity and mystery of natural shrines.
