Boudewijn WOLTHUIS (1949)

Untitled (1998)

Screenprint
Edition 3 of 30
Signed by the artist and dated lower margin in pencil

40 x 29.5 cm.

Provenance:

Dutch private collection.

Biography:

Middleton's move to the Netherlands was part of a wave of African American artists seeking refuge from racism and the lack of opportunities in the U.S., including Deborah Simon, Sherard Van Dyke, and Lorina Harris. Although he remained disconnected from the Civil Rights Movement, his work was not centered on his racial identity, which resulted in a notable absence from African American art collections in the U.S. However, he became an influential figure in the Dutch art community, paving the way for other African American artists who arrived in Europe.
