Vieux Paris porcelain, unmarked.
France, circa 1850.
Porcelain figure of the Madonna standing on an ornate Rococo-style base, holding the Christ Child on her left arm. Decorated in glossy white glaze with extensive parcel-gilding to the robe, drapery, and base, and with delicate polychrome detail to the faces and hair. The base is moulded with the crowned Marian monogram “AM” within a star-studded medallion, symbolising “Ave Maria”.
Vieux Paris porselein, ongemerkt.
35 cm. high.
Note:
This figure is a product of the Vieux Paris porcelain tradition, a collective name for the many small Parisian porcelain workshops active between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries. Characterised by rich gilding, elegant modelling, and devotional subjects, these works were popular for domestic altars and bourgeois interiors. The figure’s stylistic features, including the gilt accents and Marian emblem, suggest a mid-19th-century date, in line with similar religious figures from Paris ateliers.
