Polychrome and Gilt Porcelain Figure of the Virgin in Prayer, Vieux Paris

Vieux Paris porcelain, unmarked.

France, circa 1850.

Porcelain figure of the Virgin depicted standing with hands in prayer, wearing a long white robe adorned with gilt scroll motifs and a blue and ochre mantle decorated with gold stars. Her long brown hair falls down her back, and she stands on a scrolled base with gilded accents and green and brown ground detailing. The base underside bears no factory mark, but shows an incised “X” and “II”.

Vieux Paris porselein, ongemerkt.

21 cm. high.

Note:

Characteristic of Vieux Paris porcelain, this devotional figure reflects the decorative exuberance and religious sentiment of mid-19th-century France. The use of cobalt blue and lavish gilding was typical of Parisian porcelain ateliers producing for domestic altars and private chapels. The lack of a maker’s mark is common for Vieux Paris, which encompassed more than 30 independent porcelain factories active in and around Paris untill approximately 1870.
