The scene is populated with expressive figures including the Virgin Mary collapsing in grief, supported by attendants, Saint John, soldiers, and other onlookers, all rendered in dynamic poses. The background opens to a hilly landscape with distant crowds and Jerusalem's outline. The artist’s hand is visible in the fluid ink outlines and soft washes of colour.

Op de achtergrond een heuvelachtig landschap met figuren en de contouren van Jeruzalem.
