Gilt and Polychrome Porcelain Holy Water Font with Kneeling Angel, Vieux Paris

Vieux Paris porcelain, unmarked.

France, circa 1850.

Porcelain holy water font modelled as a kneeling angel in flowing robes adorned with gilt stars and feathered wings, holding a gilt-edged cross and scallop-shell basin.

Vieux Paris porselein, ongemerkt.

17 cm. high.

Note:

This finely decorated object is a devotional piece from the Vieux Paris tradition, a term referring to porcelain made in and around Paris by over 30 ateliers between the mid-18th century and circa 1870. Intended for private chapels or household altars, holy water fonts of this type were both functional and ornamental. The elaborate Rococo base and lavish gilding typify the exuberant Parisian style of the Second Empire period.
