Biscuit Porcelain Figure of Saint Matthias with Axe

Possibly Germany, circa 1880.

Biscuit porcelain figure of Saint Matthias, standing on a moulded scroll base with a raised cross motif. He is depicted in classical drapery, holding a flowering staff in one hand and with an axe at his feet. Finely modelled facial features with full beard and curled hair, and crisply detailed folds in the robe. Executed in matte white porcelain typical of 19th-century devotional sculpture.

22 cm. high.

Note:

Matthias the Apostle was chosen by the eleven remaining disciples to replace Judas Iscariot (Acts 1:23–26). Though he is mentioned only briefly in the New Testament, tradition holds that he fulfilled the apostolic requirements of having followed Jesus from his baptism and witnessed the ascension. Saint Matthias is consistently depicted with an axe, referencing his martyrdom.
