Glazed Porcelain Figure of Notre Dame of Montaigu, Vieux Bruxelles

Porcelain figure of the crowned Madonna holding the crowned Christ Child on her left arm, both dressed in long robes with raised decoration. The white-glazed surface is sparsely coloured, with gilt highlights to the faces and crowns, and auburn detailing to the hair. The figures stand in a stylised vertical pose, with moulded floral motifs on the robe. The integral base is inscribed in black script “N.D. de Montaigu”.

Porseleinen beeld van de gekroonde Madonna met het gekroonde Christuskind op de linkerarm, beide in lange gewaden met reliëfdecor. Het witgeglazuurde oppervlak is spaarzaam beschilderd, met vergulde accenten op gezichten en kronen, en kastanjebruine details in het haar. De figuren zijn gestileerd verticaal opgesteld, met gemodelleerde bloemmotieven op het gewaad. De geïntegreerde voet is in zwarte letters gesigneerd “N.D. de Montaigu”.

This devotional figure represents Notre Dame of Montaigu, a revered Marian image associated with the pilgrimage site in Montaigu, Belgium. Produced in the style known as Vieux Bruxelles, this type of figure was commonly made in and around Brussels during the 19th century. Vieux Bruxelles porcelain is known for its restrained colouring and delicate moulding, often created for local religious devotion.
