Polychrome and Gilt Porcelain Figure of Notre Dame de Walcourt

Possibly Belgium, inscribed “N.D. de Walcourt” to the base.

Circa 1850.

Porcelain figure of the Black Madonna and Child, both crowned and dressed in long moulded robes with stylised floral and pearl-like motifs. The faces and hands are painted black in reference to the venerated Marian image of Walcourt. The reverse is unglazed and the base inscribed in cursive script “N.D. de Walcourt” (Notre Dame de Walcourt). Underside unmarked aside from a handwritten inventory number.

Vermoedelijk België, voet gemerkt “N.D. de Walcourt”. Circa 1850.

Porseleinen beeld van de Zwarte Madonna met Kind, beide gekroond en gekleed in lange gewaden met gestileerde bloem- en parelmotieven in reliëf. Gezicht en handen zijn zwart geschilderd, verwijzend naar het vereerde Mariabeeld van Walcourt. Achterzijde ongeglazuurd; de voet voorzien van het opschrift “N.D. de Walcourt” in cursief schrift. Onderzijde ongemerkt, op een handgeschreven inventarisnummer na.

16.5 cm. high.

This figure represents Notre Dame de Walcourt, a revered Black Madonna housed in the Basilica of Saint Materne in Walcourt, Belgium. Black Madonnas are rare and symbolically powerful figures within Catholic iconography, often associated with miracles and pilgrimage.
