Polychrome and Parcel-Gilt Porcelain Figure of Saint Francis Xavier

Possibly Germany, late 19th century.

Porcelain devotional figure of Saint Francis Xavier, depicted bearded and vested in priestly garments with white surplice and black cassock, holding a parcel-gilt crucifix to his chest. The figure is finely detailed, with incised patterns on the garments and expressive hand modelling. Mounted on a shaped pedestal base decorated with applied garland, cross motif, and polychrome scrollwork. Incised number "438" to the base and painted blue mark.

Waarschijnlijk Duitsland, eind 19e eeuw.

Porseleinen devotiebeeld van de heilige Franciscus Xaverius, afgebeeld met baard in priesterlijk gewaad: een wit superplie over een zwarte toog. Hij houdt een deels verguld crucifix tegen de borst. Fijn gedetailleerd model met ingekraste patronen in het gewaad en expressieve handvormen. Geplaatst op een gevormde voet met aangebrachte guirlande, kruisdecor en polychroom rolwerk. Voet gemerkt met ingekrast nummer “438” en blauw schildermerk.

Saint Francis Xavier (1506–1552) was a Jesuit missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus. He is venerated for his extensive evangelising in Asia, especially in India and Japan.
