Vieux Paris Porcelain Holy Water Font with Angel and Gilt Cross

Paris, mid-19th century.

Porcelain holy water font in the form of a winged angel standing in prayer before a cross, with a moulded shell-shaped basin at the base. The figure is executed in glazed white porcelain with finely detailed wings and flowing drapery. The cross is glazed and richly highlighted in burnished gold, featuring a central medallion with a white dove representing the Holy Spirit. The back of the cross is painted in imitation of masonry blocks with gilt lining.

25 cm. high.

Note:
This holy water font is typical of the devotional porcelain produced in Paris during the mid-19th century, known collectively as Vieux Paris. These objects were often made in small manufactories and sold through religious retailers or at pilgrimage sites. The use of gilt and symbolic iconography—particularly the dove and cross—reflects the period’s emphasis on piety, protection, and personal devotion. Such pieces were intended for household use, hung near doorways to allow the faithful to bless themselves upon entering or leaving the home.
