Porcelain Figure of Saint Joseph with the Christ Child, Vieux Paris

Standing figure of Saint Joseph cradling the Christ Child, executed in glazed porcelain with hand-painted details in vivid tones. The saint is depicted with a lily stem, the traditional symbol of purity, while the Child holds a gilt orb surmounted by a cross, representing dominion over the world. The moulded base is richly decorated with raised star-shaped motifs and scrollwork, highlighted in gold.

De heilige draagt een leliestengel als traditioneel symbool van zuiverheid; het Kind houdt een vergulde wereldbol met kruis vast als teken van heerschappij. De gemodelleerde voet is rijk versierd met reliëfsterren en rolwerk, geaccentueerd met goud.

This devotional figure belongs to the Vieux Paris tradition, a term covering ornamental gilt porcelain from more than thirty Paris-based factories active between the mid-18th century and approximately 1870.
