Biscuit Porcelain Figure of Saint Joseph, by Mauger & Letu

Mauger & Letu, Paris.
France, late 19th century.

Standing figure of Saint Joseph, rendered in matte white biscuit porcelain with refined drapery folds. The saint holds a lily stem in his right hand and a carpenter’s square in his left, symbols of purity and his trade. He is shown in a calm, frontal pose, draped in classical garments. The rococo-style base is moulded with scrollwork and a central monogram “HH” in relief. Faintly impressed mark to the underside and number “33” to the reverse.

34 cm. high.

Note:
The attributes of Saint Joseph—lily and carpenter’s square—emphasise his dual role as protector of the Virgin and patron of workers.
