Vieux Paris porcelain, unmarked.
France, mid-19th century.
Devotional figure of the Virgin Mary standing barefoot on a rectangular plinth, displaying the Immaculate Heart on her chest. Executed in glazed porcelain with hand-painted decoration in blue, red, green, and gold. The figure is robed in a white veil, light blue cloak with gilt edging, and a red inner tunic. The base is decorated with purple linear and floral motifs and accented at the corners with scrolls.
Vieux Paris porselein, ongemerkt. Frankrijk, midden 19e eeuw.
29 cm. high.
Note:
The representation of the Immaculate Heart, encircled by rays and a crown of thorns, reflects Catholic devotional imagery promoted in France after the 1830s. This figure, painted in a typical Vieux Paris palette, would have been intended for personal devotion. The square-form pedestal with purple scrollwork is characteristic of mid-19th century decorative religious porcelain produced by smaller Parisian manufactories working outside the major firms.
