Rouen, Frankrijk, circa 1930.
Smokey Glass Vase, by Verlys France
Rouen, France, circa 1930.
Pressed glass vase in smoky brown-grey glass with a broad flaring rim and compressed bulbous body. The surface is decorated with horizontal ribbing and raised floral motifs in the 1930s Art Deco style. Moulded signature Verlys France to the underside.
Note:
The Société Holophane Française was founded in 1920 as a subsidiary of the Holophane Company (USA), with a glassworks near Rouen that originally produced headlights. By 1925, they expanded into decorative glass under the name Verlys. Initially focusing on multilayered blown glass with internal decoration, the company shifted in 1933 to high-quality press-moulded glass. Verlys designs—often featuring plants, flowers, birds, fish, or geometric patterns—reflected the Art Deco aesthetics of the time, in the manner of Lalique. Most pieces bear the moulded signature Verlys France or Verlys Made in France. In 1935, Verlys of America was established in Ohio, producing many of the same models. Production declined during WWII and was gradually abandoned, ending in France in the early 1960s.
