Etched Cameo Glass Stick Vase, by Gallé
Gallé, Nancy.
France, between 1908–1920.
Cylindrical stick vase with broad rounded foot and tapering upright neck, executed in acid-etched cameo glass with a soft satin finish. The vase is overlaid in shades of green and yellow against a rose-hued ground, decorated with a stylised thistle motif in high Art Nouveau style. Signed Gallé in cameo near the foot.
Note:
Émile Gallé (1846–1904) was a pioneering figure of the Art Nouveau movement in France, celebrated for his technical innovation in glassmaking. After his death, the Gallé workshop continued production under his name until 1936. This vase belongs to the posthumous period (1908–1920), when designs were faithfully reproduced by skilled artisans under the direction of his firm. Cameo glass was created by applying layers of coloured glass and then etching away the surface to reveal the design in relief. The naturalistic thistle motif was a recurring symbol in Gallé’s work, embodying both fragility and strength.
