Polychrome Porcelain Figure of the Madonna and Child, Vieux Bruxelles

Vieux Bruxelles porcelain.
Belgium, late 19th century.

Standing crowned figure of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, executed in glazed porcelain with hand-painted polychrome decoration. The Madonna wears a long flowing gown in pastel tones of pink, yellow, and turquoise, adorned with raised gilt dots. The Child rests on her left arm and holds a small cross in his right hand. Both figures have delicately painted features and golden crowns. The circular base is decorated with black flower motifs.

Staand beeld van de gekroonde Madonna met het Christuskind op de linkerarm, uitgevoerd in geglazuurd porselein met handgeschilderde polychrome decoratie. Maria draagt een lang vallend gewaad in pasteltinten roze, geel en turquoise, versierd met verhoogde vergulde stippen. Het Kind houdt een klein kruis in de rechterhand. Beide figuren hebben fijn geschilderde gelaatstrekken en gouden kronen. De ronde voet is versierd met zwarte bloemmotieven.

This figure belongs to the tradition of Vieux Bruxelles porcelain, a designation used for devotional and ornamental porcelain produced by multiple workshops active in Brussels from the late 18th through the 19th century. The applied raised gilt detailing and chromatic softness are typical of the Brussels style around 1880–1900.
