Vieux Bruxelles porcelain.
Belgium, late 19th century.
Devotional figure of the Virgin Mary standing barefoot and crowned, holding the Christ Child. Executed in glazed porcelain with hand-painted pastel decoration and extensive raised gilt floral ornamentation. Mary wears a robe with blue lining and gold-accented flowers throughout, echoed in the Child’s tunic. Both faces are delicately modelled and softly tinted. The circular plinth is decorated with a gilt floral frieze and blue highlights. Unmarked.
Ongemerkt.
46 cm. high.
Note:
This work belongs to the Vieux Bruxelles tradition, which encompasses porcelain production in Brussels by several workshops during the 19th century. The profuse gilt decoration and delicate pastel tones reflect the influence of French Rococo and the popular Catholic revival style of the 1850–1900 period.
