Porcelain Figure of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Vieux Andenne

Belgium, circa 1900.

Porcelain figure of the Virgin Mary displaying the Immaculate Heart, modelled standing barefoot with her hands parted to reveal a blue heart surmounted by a gilded cross and surrounded by golden rays. She is dressed in a pale blue gown and a white mantle adorned with raised and gilded stars. Her features are finely painted with a calm expression and softly blushed cheeks. The circular base is decorated with floral reliefs highlighted in pale blue and gold, and finished with a pale blue band around the foot.

Porseleinen beeld van de Maagd Maria met het Onbevlekt Hart, blootsvoets staand en met de handen geopend om het blauwe hart op de borst te tonen, bekroond met een verguld kruis en omstraald door gouden stralen. Ze draagt een lichtblauwe tuniek en een witte mantel met verhoogde en vergulde sterren. Haar gelaat is fijn beschilderd met een kalme uitdrukking en zacht gerode wangen. De ronde voet is versierd met bloemreliëfs in lichtblauw en goud, afgewerkt met een lichtblauwe rand aan de basis.

The town of Andenne in Belgium developed a strong porcelain tradition from the 18th century onward, often referred to as Vieux Andenne. Known for its devotional figures, the local workshops catered to the Catholic market in Belgium and northern France. This figure represents the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a symbol of compassion, purity, and maternal intercession.
