Mauger & Letu, Paris, with impressed “L&M” mark.
France, 19th century.
Devotional figure of the crowned Madonna holding the Christ Child, executed in white bisque porcelain with fine modelling and soft matte finish. The Virgin stands with serene expression, robed in flowing drapery and crowned with a garland of delicately formed flowers. The Child rests on her arm in a relaxed pose, both figures rendered with neoclassical grace. The stepped base features a raised emblem with a radiating monogram “AM” within a shield, surrounded by stars in relief.
Biscuitporseleinen beeld van de Madonna met Kind, Mauger & Letu (1854–1893).
Mauger & Letu, Parijs, met geperst merk “L&M”. Frankrijk, 19e eeuw.
38 cm. high.
Note:
Mauger & Letu (active 1841–1879) were Parisian manufacturers known for high-quality religious and decorative porcelain. The monogram “AM” on the base stands for Auspice Maria, Latin for “under the protection of Mary,” a traditional symbol in Catholic iconography emphasising the Virgin’s intercessory role.
