Bisque Porcelain Figure of Saint John the Baptist, by Mauger & Letu (1854-1893)

Mauger & Letu, Paris, with impressed “L&M” mark.

France, 19th century.

Bisque porcelain figure of Saint John the Baptist, depicted as a youthful bearded man standing barefoot and wearing a tunic with a mantle draped across one shoulder. His right hand is raised in gesture of blessing, and his left holds a cross-tipped staff. At his feet lies a lamb, referencing the Agnus Dei. The figure stands against a textured support resembling rockwork, set on a Rococo-style base with scrolled feet and the inscription “S. JEAN Bᵗˢᵉ” in relief.

JEAN Bᵗˢᵉ” in reliëf.

25 cm. high.

Note:
This devotional figure was produced by Mauger & Letu, a 19th-century French porcelain firm active in the second half of the century. The mark “L & M” corresponds to Letu et Mauger, whose religious bisque porcelain figures were widely distributed in France and neighbouring Catholic regions. Saint John the Baptist is shown here in his traditional iconography as the forerunner of Christ, with the lamb symbolising Christ’s future sacrifice.
