Bisque Porcelain Figure of the Madonna and Child, Mauger & Sons

Impressed mark “M&F” within an oval.

Bisque porcelain figure of the Madonna holding the Christ Child, modelled in a gentle pose with serene expressions. The Virgin wears a long robe and veil, her head crowned with a garland of flowers. The Christ Child sits upright in her left arm, looking downward with hands folded. The shaped base is moulded with a heart motif and monogram “AM” (Auspice Maria) in low relief and is supported by scrolled feet.

Biscuitporseleinen beeld van de Madonna met het Christuskind, gemodelleerd in een zachte houding met serene uitdrukkingen. Maria draagt een lang gewaad met sluier en een bloemenkrans op het hoofd. Het Kind zit rechtop op haar linkerarm, met neergeslagen blik en gevouwen handen. De gevormde voet is voorzien van een hartmotief en het monogram “AM” (Auspice Maria) in laag reliëf, en rust op rolpoten.

23.5 cm high.

This devotional figure was produced by Mauger & Sons, identifiable by the impressed “M&F” mark. The firm was active in late 19th-century France, specialising in bisque porcelain statuary for religious devotion. The “AM” monogram on the base stands for Auspice Maria, Latin for “under the protection of Mary,” a common Marian symbol used in Catholic iconography.
