An English Brass Compound microscope, By Joseph Long. London, England, circa 1890. Signed to the rear of the large stand 'Joseph Long, 43 East Cheap, London', with plano-concave mirror on sliding collar below focusing substage, with rotating mechanical stage, limb with unusual inverted fine screw focus. Measurement: H. 44 cm. catalogue Note: Long was a maker of scientific instruments. Unfortunately very little information about the life of Joseph Long is available. He operated his firm at 20 Little Tower Street in London from 1821 to 1846, & 43 East Cheap from 1885 till 1936 both London, England, and the first remained there under the same name until 1884. It is not known who maintained the company after Joseph Long’s death. Literature: Estimate: 80-100
