Bisque Porcelain Figure of Saint Roch, Mauger & Letu

Impressed mark “L & M” and model number “22” to the underside.
France, circa 1880.

Bisque porcelain figure of Saint Roch depicted as a pilgrim with a broad-brimmed hat, cloak, and staff. His right hand holds the scallop-topped pilgrim’s staff, while his left lifts his garment to reveal the plague sore on his leg—a key element of his iconography. At his side is the loyal dog said to have brought him bread during his illness. The shaped base is moulded with scrolled decoration and inscribed “Sᵗ ROCH” to the front.

26.5 cm. high.

Note:
Saint Roch (Saint Rocco) is venerated as the protector against plague and pestilence. According to legend, he contracted the plague while ministering to the sick and retreated into the forest, where he was miraculously sustained by a dog who brought him bread. This devotional figure was produced by Mauger & Letu, whose impressed mark appears beneath the base.
