Pair of Ceramic Holy Water Fonts Depicting a Praying Nun, by Petrus Regout

A pair of ceramic holy water fonts molded in relief with the figure of a praying nun in front of a cross, her hands joined in devotion. One font is glazed in celadon green, the other in ivory white. Each has an architectural triangular top and a rounded basin, with the word "AMEN" inscribed in relief at the front. The reverse of each bears the printed factory mark of Petrus Regout & Co., Maastricht.

Een paar keramische wijwaterbakken, in reliëf gemodelleerd met de voorstelling van een biddende non voor een kruis, met gevouwen handen in devotie. Eén bak is geglazuurd in seladongroen, de andere in ivoorwit. Beide zijn voorzien van een architectonische driehoekige top en een afgerond bakje, met het woord “AMEN” in reliëf aan de voorzijde. De achterzijde is gemerkt met het gedrukte fabrieksmerk van Petrus Regout & Co., Maastricht.

Note:
Petrus Regout (1801–1878) established Petrus Regout & Co. in Maastricht in 1836, marking the beginning of industrial-scale ceramic production in the Netherlands. By the turn of the 20th century, the firm was producing a wide variety of religious and devotional objects in addition to tableware. Holy water fonts such as these were popular devotional items for use in Catholic homes, reflecting both artistic stylization and mass-production techniques.
