Madonna del Cardellino, After Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (1483-1520)

Madonna with the Christ Child and Saint John.

Unsigned, Italy, 18th century.
Oil on Canvas.

Depicting the Madonna seated with the Christ Child and the infant Saint John the Baptist in an idealised landscape. The Virgin is shown with a serene expression, wearing a red dress and blue mantle, holding an open book as the Christ Child reaches toward Saint John, who presents a reed cross. Executed in fine classical style with delicate modelling, clear contours, and harmonious colour contrasts. Housed in an elaborately carved and gilded frame with Renaissance revival ornament.

109 x 79 cm.

Note:
This composition is based on Raphael’s celebrated painting Madonna del Cardellino (c.1506), now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Raphael’s work was widely copied in the 17th and 18th centuries as devotional and academic models. The present painting reflects the continued influence of High Renaissance aesthetics well into the 18th century, with its balanced composition, idealised figures, and symbolic gestures. The goldfinch originally held by Saint John, a symbol of Christ’s Passion, is subtly referenced here in the hand gesture. Works of this kind were highly sought after by Grand Tour collectors and religious institutions alike.
