Pair of Porcelain Plates Depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ, by Société Céramique

Société Céramique, Maastricht.

A pair of porcelain plates decorated with hand-painted portraits: one of the Virgin Mary in a blue veil, and the other of Christ crowned with thorns, both set against a warm golden background. The plates feature finely detailed facial expressions and soft tonal modeling characteristic of devotional porcelain of the period. The reverse with impressed crowned shield marks and the red pattern numbers "1765" and "8."

23.5 cm. Diameter.

Note:
Société Céramique was an important Maastricht ceramic factory active between 1859 and 1958. It specialized in both utilitarian and decorative wares, often incorporating religious imagery into porcelain and faience production during the 19th century. Religious plates like these, combining refined portraiture with a devotional function, were typically displayed in private homes or small chapels. Maastricht was a major center of ceramic production in the Netherlands during this period, with Société Céramique playing a central role.
