So far known, this ‘Prototype’ 1957 Atala 50 Super Sport Special from the Amsterdam Italian Motor Museum is the only known example with a Demm engine. We could not find one example of an Atala with a Demm engine. Therefor we think this is a one of a kind for every collector or Museum of Italian mopeds.

Atala was a historic Italian bicycle factory. The Company started in 1921 as a bicycle factory in Padua by Cezare Rizzato and manufactured under the brand name Ceriz. In 1923 (some say 1925), Rizzato started production of motorcycles in with JAP and Blackburne motors and mostly English components. In 1938, the Atala brad was added (probably named after the Eumaeus Atala butterfly species).

Since 1952, Atala mopeds with light engines have been made of 49, 69, 100 and 125cc, with their own and other engines of good quality, like the Minarelli 2-stroke engines. In 2002, the company Rizzato existed for 70 years. It was a success story from the start.

DEMM was founded in Milan as OPRAM. It became OMD in 1926 to become DEMM in 1928. The company first  starts a line of very high quality gears, then moves on to machine tools for the production of both straight and helical toothed gears, designing and patenting an innovative lubrication system.

In 1953, Demm conquered the market of engines and in 1954, they  start with the production line of the only 30° three-speed inclined vertical cylinder engine, the Demm 50cc 2T initially for other assemblers. All the half-casings of the 50 cm³ engines are made of die-cast aluminum and assembled in the assembly line without additional machining with pneumatic screwdrivers with the use of Allen screws and the aid of shaved gears created inside the company proving to be technologically avant-garde for the time.
