Catalogue note:
Cornelis Symonsz. van der Schalcke was a painter and a merchant of
prints who mainly painted landscapes with figures and animals. An
outstanding quality of his scarce paintings show the influence of J.van
Goyen, F.de Hulst, P.Molijn, A.van Ostade and J.Ruisdael. The artist was
painted by Frans Hals as The Sergeant of the St. George Doelen in one
of his paintings of civil guards, which is part of the collection in the
Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem.
