Catalogue note:
Gerard Hermansz. van Honthorst, also known as Gerrit van Honthorst and
Gherardo della Notte, was a Dutch painter of Utrecht. He was a pupil of
Abraham Bloemaert. Honthorst visited Italy from 1616 until 1620, where he
copied the naturalism and eccentricities of Michelangelo da Caravaggio. He
set up a school in Utrecht together with his colleague Hendrick ter Brugghen
and represented the so-called Dutch Caravaggisti. His time not consumed in
producing pictures was devoted to portraits. Honthorst’s works are numerous
and plentiful and are represented in both English and continental galleries.
